Savitri Devi and her husband, Asit Krishna Mukerji, were suspected by the British authorities of being Axis agents in India, and Savitri herself claimed in later years that they had indeed been engaged in espionage for the Japanese during the war. The following undated declassified file from MI7, which was a branch of the British War Office’s Directorate of Military Intelligence, contains a list of foreigners who were suspected of being Axis agents. The file number is KW 93/39-Poll(W), British MI7. A scan of the entire file, entitled “Potentially hostile foreigners,” is below. On page 52, in the subsection listing “Indians under suspicion” in Bengal, we find Asit Mukherji, and Savitri is listed on page 55.
