Dearest Comrade [A],

Thank you from the bottom of my heart for your royal gift of $200 (two hundred dollars only). As my pension has not yet reached me — though due the 1st of September — it really is a “Godsend.”

I wrote to the “Securité Socialeand to the bank through which they send the check. The bank has sent the check (but not registered — In France they don’t seem to realize the conditions of India. Here I register all letters) on 30 August 1979. As it never arrived they are “making an inquiry” after “putting a stop” to the check so that no one can cash it — provided it has not been stolen and already cashed. After inquiry they’ll send me another one, they say. I asked them to register all their mail to me. I can’t understand why they don’t do it.

I have yet to wait for my operation says the eye specialist — whom I am to see again in a fortnight or so. I do wish I have as much luck as you, concerning my poor eyes — which cause me difficulty in writing my next book about Ironies et paradoxes de l’histoire et de la légende. Up till now I could only write 1½ chapters on account of the strain. I can just follow the lines with my left eye. But can hardly see what I am writing.

If I can read your PS correctly (hand written: I can read easily only print or type) I am to “return this letter” (i.e., your letter of the 8th of November 1979, to me) “at my leisure.” So as you tell me, I am returning it in this envelope according to your wish.

The 2nd edition of The Lightning and the Sun [1] is the work of Samisdat Publishers, Ltd. [address omitted].

It is, I suppose also available from Samisdat Publishers Ltd. USA [address omitted] as this address has been printed on the 2nd page as you will see when you receive the two copies I sent you. (I am astonished you did not receive them yet, as I sent them registered and on the same day as my letter.)

With renewed thanks and with the ritual greetings

Yours sincerely,
Savitri Dêvi Mukherji
